Frutas, Comidas del Calle y Especiales Locales

Colombia has the most spectacular fruit!!! Almost every day we try a new fruit we have never seen or heard of. In this photo is one of the popular jugo (juice) stands that we find in every city. You can choose any of these fresh fruits and they will blend you up a smoothie. Here we have sapote (like a sweet orange squash), mango, banana, tomate de arbol, piƱa, maracuya, y lulo.Kiwi, Curubu, Tomate de Arbol, Grenadilla (our favorite!)

In San Gil we had fun exploring the huge market. Vendors come and sell piles and piles of delicious fresh fruits and vegetables for super cheap!
Lulo, Maracuya (passionfruit), Tomate de Arbol, Manzana
Mango, Perra, Uva (grape), Naranja

Colombia also has incredibly tasty and cheap street food. The most typical is the arepa: a fried ball of corn meal dough with meat, cheese, or egg inside. There are also delicious grilled meats on shishkabobs, empenadas, cut up mangos, and much more!

This is a tasty oblea filled with ariquipe (carmel) y queso (cheese) Grilled corn is a popular street food. Also at this stand are the delicious chorizos.

But not all the food is so appealing!! In the region of Santander, the much loved specialty are Hormigas Culonas (literally big butt ants). They are traditionally roasted and eaten as a snack like peanuts. After several days in the region we finally brought ourselves to try them. Jordan says okay and Molly says disgusting!!
Another common food of the Santander region is goat. It is a salty dark meat which was not bad, but probably would not order again. Also on this plate is yuca, a root similar to potato, and pepitoria, goat intestines.
